Speakers' Corner– I’ve made large hanging mobiles where sandbags and megaphones are counterbalanced and moving in the space. The mobiles are suspended at different levels and ‘soap boxes’ are scattered around the perimeters to allow speakers to step up and reach the megaphones. If you are feeling brave and want more attention, stack up a few boxes and reach a higher megaphone. I enjoy the physical manifestation of the notion of balance, that is present in a contraption that’s meant for people to voice their mind through. Another object has a shape reminiscent of a gallows. One must stand on the box under it and assume the position of the soon-to-be-hung in order to reach the megaphone and speak. The overall appearance is somewhat militant, with the green sandbags and grey megaphones. This is a little reminder that rising above the crowd and claiming your right to voice your opinion is a forceful act that has connotation to be careful with.
